The YOG Torch Relay

Last Wednesday, all teachers and students from Hwa Chong Institution gathered along Tan Kah Kee Drive to witness a historic moment that will go down in the history of Hwa Chong, Singapore and the world - The starting of the Youth Olympic Games torch relay. Students from Sec 1 all the way to JC2 stood at the sides of the Tan Kah Kee drive and waited in anticipation and excitement for the torch to arrive.

Due to the excitement, false alarms of the torch arriving could be seen every few minutes, the sec 2 Ortus and ProEd classes, who were standing farther away from the gate simply followed the others in clapping and cheering blindly, thinking that the flame has arrived when it was just a bus entering the school gates (and yes, there were lots of advertisements by Samsung and Singtel (?), what a clever way and opportunity for advertisements, but they were the sponsors anyway, I guess).

However, our anticipation and hopes subsided when we witness a man strolling up the 'hill' holding onto a purple oil lamp, waving it at the crowds from time to time. Beside him was what we did not expected - an unlit torch. So instead of being able to see a lit torch, we saw little flickers of fire in the oil lamp instead. After the men walked past and to the clock tower, we could hear the performances and events going on there but we could not witness anything. We were disappointed, did we just waited an hour under the hot sun just to view a little 'candle'?

As the hosting city of the Youth Olymic Games, is that how we show our spirit of Olymics? Groan and complain about this that are under our expectations. I think not. Instead of complaining about losses and failures (if we are one of the competititors), we should actually thank the experience that we had, to be able to stand in the ring, and compete in front of the world. We should also be fortunate that the games are held in Singapore, and thus we have easy access to the events that are happening. So I think the experience of cheering for the arrival of the unlit torch and oil lamp is an opportunity that we should not complain about, as not everyone get to witness it.

Last week, Xu Yang was one of the torch bearers for the torch relay, and he was asking me if I was going to support. I have to admit that I was not very interested so I replied 'no'. He seemed disappointed and he said 'Not many people are enthu about this'. So I said 'It dosent matter if people are attending and supporting or not, it is the experience that you get from torch bearing, not every gets to do it and you probably won't have another chance in the future.' So since it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, we should treasure it more. Hence, I think the one hour wait was worth it and it was not wasted at all(:

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceromony..

"SINGAPORE!"

A guy with the Singapore flag walks out and join in the rows.

The theme song "Everyone" started playing..

Four short figures walk out onto the middle of the platform, as seen from a high angle shot.
Wait.. something's missing.. or someone..

Oh. Sean Kingston.
When I first realised that Sean Kingston was missing for the singing of the YOG theme song during the YOG opening ceremony, I was shocked. But after reading THIS in the Shin Min Daily News, I was stunned.

http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/08/15/sean-kingston-awoled-from-yog-opening-ceremony/ (taken from Shin Min Daily News)

According to the article from Shin Min, Sean Kingston did not come to Singapore on Thursday when he was supposed to and he did not have any intentions to fly to Singapore either. The reason that the newspaper stated was that Sean did not like his pay that he got for participating and after quarrels and negotiations, he had decided to leave the project. As a reader (and especially as a Singaporean, though it does not relate to my feelings), after reading the article, I was engraged. So did Sean Kingston drop the project just because of money issues? For normal people, like you and me, we treasure opportunities than money. But I realised that once people get famous and endless opportunites approaches them, they start feeling superior and put money before opportunity.

Not only Sean Kingston was missing out the chance to be in an important page in world history, he actually disappointed and let down everyone in the Americas. As we all know, each singer for the song represented a continenet, Tabitha Nauser (Asia), Steve Appleton (Europe), Jody Williams (Africa), Jessica Mauboy (Ocenia) and Sean Kingston (Americas), so as the representive for the Americas, being AWOL from the YOG opening meant the M-I-A for the YOG for the Americans. Imagine if Tabitha Nauser were to miss the performance, how would the foreigners view Asians?

Irresponsible.

The missing of Sean Kingston actually meant a disgrace to the Americans and also leaves a bad impression of them. A black sheep. And another blogger mentioned "Each of the 5 singers represents a continent. Imagine a circle missing from the Olympic flag? It just feels incomplete to me although the other 4 singers were awesome on the show." (http://spinorbinmusic.wordpress.com/2010/08/16/sean-kingston-and-yog-drama/)

So is Sean accountable for his MIA from the show?

As requested, everyone in 2O2 had to buy "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" (pretty long title eh?). After reading it, I can only describe the book in a two words "Genius. Extraordinary." The story throughout the book is brilliant, characterisation is used throughout the novel and the way the protagonist act and think are creative ideas by the author. However, sadly we would not be going through this remarkable book in class (so much better than some other literature books we've done) so I have decided to blog about an issue in the book - Independance.

I would link the topic less to the book as I had already forgotten most of it since I read it December 2009 so my main focus is comparing Singaporean teenagers with Christopher.

There is an IRONY (*bling bling*) when comparing Singaporean teens with Christopher. Although Christopher has Asperger's Syndrome (which caused his fears of working with others, thats why), he worked independantly and without the help of others. However, in Singapore, children are well educated and they can function properly, but many of us are not independant.

We rely on adults too often that we sometimes do not think for our own and cannot even do basic things, some of us may not even know how to take the train from Toa Payoh to Dhoby Ghaut (no change of line is needed!) while Christoper was able to work out on his own and take the train to London to meet his mum.

The problem also lies within the hiring of maids in households. More and more families with both parents working are hiring maids to their households and it has led to a rise in teenagers being too reliant on them. A survey done on 104 teenagers aged 16-19 from few years back has shown that 40% of them cannot survive without their maids (the 40% have maids in their household for at least 5 years).

Many teenagers with maids have the mindset that "We paid her money, so we can ask her to help us with anything", thus asking their maids to do everything for them and leading to their laziness. Worse still, parents who are too protective of their children orders the maids to help their children do everything, for example, helping their children to carry their bags. This will result in the child, thinking that he do not need to worry about anything since he has a maid and hence, he has no sense of resposibility.

I believe that it is both the parents' responsibility and the child's resposibility (and maybe the maid) to ensure that they do not rely on their maids and learn to do things on their own. Therefore, I support Hwa Chong's programs to train the students into responsible and independant leaders, with the adequate leadership skills, or else, the future of Singapore will be in danger if all Singaporean teenagers (the to-be-leaders) are a group of reliant people with no responsibility at all.

Live our dreams, fly our.. Err. Where are the flags?

"Live our dreams, fly our flags", this is the theme for NDP Singapore 2010.

Inspirational.

Motivational.

But this may just be a quote, a quote to get our nation's people together, a quote to foster patriotism, a quote which... failed.

Looking at the theme for this year's NDP, I can infer that the objective of using this line as this year's theme is to get our fellow Singaporeans to fly the Singapore flags for national day once again. I still remember when I was in primary school, National Day meant a huge make over for the facades of the HDB flats, with the Singapore Flag flying outside every household.

You can't find such scenes anymore, this is obviously photoshopped (at least I think so).

And now... (taken from my HDB window)

Photo 1 gives an impression that Singaporeans have a love for their country, whether it was because our citizens are being forced to do so, at least they took the time to 1. Buy a flag and 2. Hang the flag. But photo 2 simply shows that Singaporeans cannot be bothered and are too lazy to hang the flag of their country anymore. I mean.. how long does it take to hang a flag? I have to admit that neither my family hangs the flag too. Actually, right now... we don't even have one.

Since a year or two ago, flags have been "mysteriously" disappearing from the windows of HDBs and Condos. When I first saw that, I felt rather insulted and disappointed, I felt that Singaporeans no longer have a love for their own country anymore. This question always comes into my mind: How much has Singapore done for us? And how much have we done for Singapore? Singapore had done so much for all of us, but we can't even be bothered to hang the Singapore flag to celebrate her birthday...

However, whether Singaporeans hang the Singapore Flag or not, it does not really matter. Most importantly, we show graditute to our country by giving back what it had gave us, the citizens are united and all of us know that we have something in common: We Are Singaporeans. (It highly reminds me of the "We are singaporeans" section of "The Noose", where Singaporeans disgrace themselves by giving really stupid answers when asked a question about Singapore and her history)

But still, I long to see another National Day where the Singapore Flags can be seen outside every household's window...

Just for laughs:

Residents from other countries showing their love for their own country. Not really applaudable though.

Creative Singaporeans hanging their flag in a creative way.

LA Home Learning (war poetry)

RAINBOW DEATH

America did not foresee
Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!
Expecting others to pay a high price.
Now thinking twice?
Toll on the innocent and unborn.

Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.
Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead.
All the deceit continues to spread.
Nefariously America led astray -
Generations untold WILL pay -
Execrable effects of agent orange spray!

Hubert Wilson

1) Point Of View

This is from the point of view of an American Soldier who fought in the Vietnam War. The poet thinks that war is useless, pointless and instead of settling things, war leads to multiple consequences but he focuses on the usage of chemicals during war. The poet critisises America as America "did not foresee" the consequences of using agent orange and other chemicals. The poet knew that the usage of agent orange largely affected and caused the death of many innocent people in vietnam and the other generations of people would have to pay for what the war had caused. In the end, no one won the war and all the deaths and misery created by the war went in vain.

2) Situation and Setting

The poem is set in the Vietnam War (a.k.a Second Indochina War) where chemical warfare was used. This can be seen from sentences like "Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri" and "Execrable effects of agent orange spray". From the poem, it can be seen that by using these chemicals during the war, many deaths and problems to innocent people were caused. This is evident in "Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead" and "Toll on the innocent and unborn" showing the consequences of chemical warfare. The poet also blames and critisises America in joining the war, "Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn" tells us that America will regret what they had done one day due to them having great power and not thinking about the consequences of chemical warfare.

3) Language and Diction

"Rainbow Death"
The title "Rainbow Death" itself is an oxymoron. The word "death" is a dark word and it means the end of life of a living creature while "rainbow" is a beautiful thing that appears after rain, it is a symbol of hapiness and it means the ending of a terrible situation (it is also a metaphor for the poisonous chemicals and gas used). The title tells the readers that though the war has ended, deaths and pain caused misery to the poet and the innocent people.
Potpourri

"Potpourri"
According to dictionary.com, "potpourri" is a mixture of dried petals of roses or other flowers with spices, kept in a jar for their fragrance. "Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!" Potpourri in the poem means the different types and colours of the chemicals and gas used in the war. It produces the smell of death and blood instead of nice fragrants, showing that the chemical warfare killed many people.

Personal Response

After reading the poem "Rainbow Death" by Hubert Wilson, I feel that war is cruel and should be avoided. Though some people say that war is inevitable, I believe that if the people can live in harmony and maintain good relationships, war can be avoided. War is useless and it only brings about death, pain and suffering to innocent people. The other people will also have to clean up the aftermath of war and the future generations will have to pay the price that war had created. The message of the poem is to tell the readers about the cruelty of war and it makes me reflect on the inhumanity of humans and the ways that humans act.

Multiple Intelligences

[Sorry if I sound very sian in this post, it's just cause I'm not very happy right now, read the previous post to know why.]

Last Tuesday I did a multiple itetlligence test to find out in which area am I good at and do two assignments according to the test result. I found this exercise is quite useful as I can find out what am I good at and use my 'intelligences' to complete a special task, in this way, I can learn faster and more efficiently. For example, from the test result, I am better musically and spatially, and I am supposed to do a song and an art design, it would be easier for me to complete the task rather than forcing me to choose from topics related to naturalist (Research on mockingbirds) and a linguistic task (doing an interview). Other from that, we also can find out what I am weak at and therefore should work harder in that area. However, the test result may not be accurate as from what I face, there are quite some questions which I did not know the answer myself, thus I just randomly picked what seemed to be 'correct', also there were only five options for us to choose from and so I does not work out as accurately as a written/spoken test.

We had this exercise last year and that MIDAS version of multiple intelligences test was much more accurate than this one. The one we did recently was much more general and it only tells you your percentage of each intelligences while the MIDAS version splits up each intelligences into a few catergories (for example for musical, there was musical instruments, singing, appreciation etc and for kinaesthetic there was sports, dance etc). So by using the MIDAS version, we can find out more about ourselves and it is also more accurate as I got low for my kinaesthetic but I was high in dance in the MIDAS version.

I'm seriously pissing off cause stupid blogger failed after I spent one hour doing my freaking blog post

Be Italian

Okay... I should just let it go and just... *holds breath* redo this post.. haiz.. since it would be so ironic if I talk about Guido escaping his problems and I'm escaping by giving up this post. Got 3 more post so need chiong now. So let me keep is short since it's already late. For the serious part, skip to the parts after the 2nd poster.

The movie I am going to review on is NINE, a musical film directed by Rob Marshall (the director of CHICAGO :D) and based on the broadway production ... NINE.

Was begging my mum to let me watch this and finally she let me watch today, since it's ending on Wednesday! Guess I was the youngest in the cinema because nine is something kids won't enjoy (actually I didn't really too). And the trailers they played before the movie were very sexual, not something they would play before stuff like Alice in Wonderland and Aliens in the Attic or Alvin and the Chips (omg, 3 As xD).

Throughout my body was aching and was very bored, probably cause I was watching it alone. I was counting down till the end of the movie by the number of songs left, haha which was something I never expect I would do! O: Was anticipating for this movie so much but was very disappointed, the numbers were too sudden and I was annoyed at the fact that the screen kept changing from black and white to colour while Kate Hudson was dancing in Cinema Italiano, and yes I was really bored.

Movie - 2/5
Actors/acting - 4/5? (I don't really judge actors and their acting)
Borin-O-meter: 4/5
Songs: 3-4/5 (Some are !!! while the rest are ...)
Choreography: 5/5! Its awesome that you wanna watch it over and over again
Rating: PG but contains many sexual contents, predicted it to be M18
Overall: JUST WATCH YOUR FAVOURITE PARTS ON YOUTUBE! (but sadly, the user who uploaded all the numbers got suspended so.. too bad)

This was the poster that was used in Singapore.

I guess this was used is the US or some other countries?

The story was set in 1969, Italy. It tells the story of a famour director, Guido Contini, who struggles to write the script for his new film, Italia, while trying to handle all his lovers in his life, his wife, his mistress and his muse (and of course there are much much more female characters in the movie). Guido has a loving wife, Luisa, but he craved for more and satisfied his lust with his mistress, Carla, loves his muse, Claudia, and is also attracted to other women, like Stephanie, a female journalist. His inability to balance his personal life and his work resulted in a downfall in his life, causing him to lose everything he had, his family, his film and his fame.

Guido was ten days away from the beginning of the shooting of his film; he attended press conferences but no one, except his costume designer, Lilli, knew that he did not have the script ready yet, and all he did was to escape. He lied and escaped questions from the press as already seen from the words of Lilli "You're a world class lair, darling. Go out there and lie for Italy. Lie for Italia." He went on searching for inspiration for the story even from his dead mother and childhood prostitute but he did not work hard enough and eventually gave up halfway. He though that escaping was the solution to the problem but it only added on to his predicament, through lying to Luisa about his movie and him not going out with his mistress anymore, it only solved their problem for a short while and it worsened after she found out the truth. In the end Guido could not take it anymore so he decided to reveal the truth to the public, about him not having a film and it caused him to lose trust from the press, the fans and his fame.

[I should skip the last paragraph about early contact with pornography that may have caused his strong sexual desires because I'm really tired now]

And if you have some time, check out the number Be Italian, sung by Fergie, who plays the prostitute Saraghina in the film, the song, the voice, the dance, th tambourine and stuff it's really nice =D

Musical number review:

1. Overture Delle Donne [Female Cast] - The best opening I've seen so far, the dance and the singing is really nice too. 10/10

2. Guido's Song [Daniel-Day Lewis] - I don't really care about this one, it's weird I only like the ending where some girls come out to sing. 4/10

3. A Call From The Vatican [Penelope Cruz] - Really sexual, uneasy. But the fact that she's dancing on top of some glossy black surface with pink curtains/lights and ropes, setting is very nice. 8/10

4. Folies Bergere [Judi Dench] - It's kinda interesting but gets a little boring when you don't know what she's singing and she kept repeating 'Folies Bergere'. 8/10

5. Be Italian [Fergie] - Like I said it, 10/10! FANTASTIC!

6. My Husband Makes Movies [Marion Cotillard] - Boring, and I kept wanting to laugh in the theatre cause it sounded like My Husband Makes Smoothies. 5/10

7. Cinema Italiano [Kate Hudson] - Song was nice, set was incredible, costumes are fantastic but you just can't seem to specially like it or anything. And it's annoying when they kept changing colour! 7.5/10

8. Guarda La Luna [Sophia Loren] - I heard she's some film legend or whatever but her number is just boring, I totally don't see the purpose of her number appearing in that sudden place. But the candles are creative. 3/10

9. Unusual Way [Nicole Kidman] - Who cares 1/10

10. Take It All [Marion Cotillard] - It scared the hell outa me when it started (i jumped). The song wasn't that bad, the striptease was.. okay, but I didn't pay much attention to it. 6/10

11. I Can't Make This Movie - Boringgggggggg! And please stop shouting, sing more melodiously. 2/10

12. Finale - Yea I know no one sang this, but I liked it only when they pan and zoom out on everyone standing on the balconies, the part where they come out 1 by 1 took too long and boring, i mean they all just came out and hold onto the railings. 6/10

(The credits was very coooool, but totally dosen't fit the nature of this musical)

You're a world class liar, darling. Go out there and lie for Italy. Lie for Italia.

Singapore vs. Indonesia, Hwa Chong vs. Spastic Children's Association

Yesterday my dad was watching football when I had my breakfast, it was Manchester United vs. Aston Villa (or something). I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my veins as I watched the excitement of the game building up. It then brought me to a memory of a football game I watched live before the first term of my Hwa Chong life started.

It was a football game between Singapore and Indonesia and it was the first time ever I watched a football game live. I was excited about it but ended up being disappointed when Singapore lost to Indonesia. It did not matter though, as I knew that the Singapore team did tried hard, but what disappointed me more, was the behavior of the spectators. Indonesia was on away and there was a big block of Indonesians who flew to Singapore just to support their country. Despite an approximate 10:1 ratio of Singaporean and Indonesian spectators, their spirit and moral were far over ours.

Everytime I glanced at the block assigned for our overseas friends, you can see a sea of red, all cheering and waving the flags in their hands, every now and then they would pass this giant red flag around. They cheered for their country hard and not once they jeered at the Singapore team. However, what was embarrassing was that it was the opposite for Singapore. Singapore hardly cheered, they were jeering most of the time and they also developed this "cheer" that was supposed to criticize the Indonesian teams. Everytime the ball reached near Idonesian's team goal, many of the Singaporean spectators stood up to cheer, but they threw insults and groaned when the ball did not went in the direction that they wanted it to go. For the Indonesians, despite the failure kicks from their country players, they continued to cheer and supported their team.

I had been wondering, maybe the morality of the Indonesian players did help them to win, and the jeers from the Singaporeans demoralised our country players. What happened to the spirit that the Singaporeans had before Singapore was independant? Is it only shown during the National Day Parade, are the Singaporeans just putting up a show? And this incident brought me to another experience.

Last year a group of students signed up for a CIP to help out at the sports day of the Spastic Children's Association under the lead of Joshua Lim and his mother. Despite the children's disabilities, they were in high spirits on that day and most of them participated in the competitive games and we were relieved when we saw the smiles on their faces. While watching their teammates compete in the race, the different teams cheered at the top of their voices. Although most of them had speaking disabilities, they still tried to cheer and support.

On my way home, Joshua's mother asked me whether I had any thoughts on this event and the first thing that came into my mind was a comparison of the Spastic Children's Association Sports Meet and our Hwa Chong-Nanyang Sports meet. What disappointed me was that instead of cheering for our schoolmates, most people did not even care about the events. There can running event going on but the terraccess were empty as if there was no sports meet going on. Everyone got bored after awhile and began walking around the school and we hardly hear a cheer going on.

It made me reflect on us. Do we need to lose what we have or deprived from a priveledge just to know how priveleged we are? There are so much good qualities that those children have than us, when we have a much better life than us. Are we taking what we have for granted..

Qn. Write a song about the Tom Robinson Trial / life in Maycomb / any other incidents.

MAYCOMB TOWN
Performed by the Young & adult Scout, Boo, Atticus, Jeremy, Dill, Mayella, Mrs. Dubose, Bob, Tom and Judge Taylor

SCOUT
Listen to the chirps in the air,
The beautiful songs they sing,
Hear the chiming bells of the church,
How the wind is rhyming.

SCOUT
See the flowers dance in the sun,
Smell the smell of nature they give,
That’s why I live in this peaceful town,
It’s the perfect place I live.

SCOUT
Watch the children say goodbye,
Step out of the house to the school,
Having fun in the sun and getting gay in the day,
Nothing scares them except, Boo.

BOO
Boo!

SCOUT
Smell the sense of friendliness and care,
Amongst the citizens of my quiet town,
Feel the purity of the children,
So carefree that they never frown.

ATTICUS
Looking at those children leave,
The distance drifting apart,

ATTICUS & BOO
But luckily we’re in a placid town,
I can let go of my heart.

SCOUT & JEM
And that is where we live and where we’re bound,
Our perfect and peaceful Maycomb Town.
That is where we live and where we’re bound,
Our perfect and peaceful Maycomb Town.

JEM
Up in the tree!

DILL
Down on the ground!

SCOUT
It just us three –

ALL THREE
In our personal town!

SCOUT & DILL
Love is in the air!

JEM & DILL
Fun is everywhere!

JEM
It’s just –

ALL THREE
Our perfect, peaceful and placid Maycomb Town.

EVERYONE IN MAYCOMB
Our perfect, peaceful and placid Maycomb Town!

SCOUT
But when the sky turns overcast,
The lightning strikes and thunder crashes,
Another mocking bird is killed once again,
A prejudicial Maycomb Town.

MAYELLA
Life’s so unfair, who can hear my prayer?
I can cry for help but no one’s there!

(Citizens
You white trash!)

BOB
What’s with this world, what are they doing to my girl?

CITIZEN #1 (whispering)
Look at that dirty native!

CITIZEN #2 (whispering)
Is that where he live?

(Mrs. Dubose
You nigger-lover!)

TOM
I am innocent but they won’t believe me,

(Judge Taylor
Silence!)

TOM
What happened to Maycomb, where is the equality?
Is it just ‘cause I’m black? Do I look like I lie?
Where is our freedom, our rights, is this where I once lived?

ATTICUS
Judge Taylor, he is not to be blamed!

JUDGE TAYLOR
Calm down Finch, let me go on with my verdict.

(Jem
That’s not fair!)

ATTICUS
He is saying the truth, he only speaks the truth!

WHITE JUDGES & AUDIENCES (whispering)
But all niggers lie –

JUDGE TAYLOR
And the decision is fixed!

SCOUT
Maycomb, now and then,
It’s so different, I can never recognize it, again.
